Of course its more practical to just circle to enter the pattern at a normal distance when you see the runway, I don't doubt that for a minute. I find it exceptionally frustrating to apply logic and reason to the grey zones within the regs or procedures listed in the AIM, but I have to try and fill the gaps within my own knowledge to improve. I hate accepting the fact that I don't know something.
