Perhaps the most influential book in American urban planning is The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs. It is a critique on urban planning of the 1950s. Jacobs argues against then standard zoning and says that it is actually contributing to the decline of cities. Instead of highways and single use zoning Jacobs argues that mixed use, mixed income neighborhoods are best for communities and cities. Many urbanists will say that the book inspired them to get into urban planning. Let me know of your interests and I may be able to recommend some books I've read or heard about.
