Rhein-Ruhr area was cheated out of getting one of the largest metro networks in the world by gradually converting their tram lines into subways. From the sixties to today, plans and ambitions in the system have become smaller and smaller. Today, Stadtbahn Rhein-Ruhr is a disjointed mess of light rail tunnels and tram lines on different track and loading gauges on the brink of financial collapse.
