the black circle is the hook of the rim that the tyre bead sits on
the red circle, is the well of the rim, that the spokes go through.
the red circle has a smaller circumference than the black circle
so when you're trying to get a tyre bead onto or off your rim, go around the tyre with your hands pushing the bead off the hook and into the well. This creates slack for the point you're working on. You do it multiple times and easy tyres will go on and off with no levers and hard tyres will go on and off without puncturing the tube and making your thumbs bleed and breaking levers
