Picrel is an OG mtb converted to 700c, bought it in an auction this year for £140, pretty much what you said except mine is going to be slightly quicker on the pavement and slightly less capable off it, which is fine as I put fenders on it and use it solely for wet day commutes.
I bought a few new bikes when I was younger, but eventually realised that if you know what you're looking for and have patience you can get so much more bang for your buck if you buy a well looked after used bike.
Most of us fell into the consoomer trap at some point, I feel some sympathy for those still stuck in the pointless 'The latest model' spending vortex.
