You'll find that most pro road cyclists, who ride the most km of anyone, don't train with gloves.
I never wear gloves on my road bike.
Brake hoods are rubber. Flat bar grips are often rubber too. They're comfortable.
Also drop bars have nothing inherently to do with how aggressive your position is. Many people ride drop bars at saddle height in a relatively relaxed upright position. Infact drop bars in that sense can afford you a -more- relaxed setup, because you can get into the drops when you want to get lower.
Drop bars are ergonomic because of this. Put your hands infront of you in fists. Try it with your knuckles lined up vertically. That's drop bars. Then try it with your knuckles lined up horizontally. That's flat bars. See how your elbows splay out to the side and your wrists are a little strained?
Bullhorns are basically drop bars but with just the hoods & flats position. You put the brakes on the horns because that's where you have superior control. It's a fine setup. You do have slightly better grip for really hauling on the bars for mashing but that's not really how to ride a road bike.
