The benefits of 29ers are clear yet exaggerated. There are three scientific studies on the 26er vs 29er subject which all show max 2% faster laps when ridden by XC professionals with little difference how they fatigue muscles. If the relationship between diameter and XC riding speed would be linear, you would see less than 1% benefits from 27.5er, which is probably why it had to be named "27.5" instead of the real diameter that is closer to 26.5.
