I've only had brief riding experiences with good mechanical and hydro set-ups. I found them to be comparable to a well-adjusted v-brake set up; hydros being the best. My biggest issue with discs is how they get in the way of my low-rider racks and fenders. Also, the increased complexity and cost for only marginal gains in fair conditions. Where I believe discs really thrive is off-road, braking under heavy loads, or icy conditions when the rims freeze up. V-brakes still work in these situations, but the pads get burnt up very quickly. Might as well get decent hydro discs because wet-weather v-brake pads don't last for regular winter riding.
