On Friday 16 2005, a young man with an unhealthy obsession for trams stole a Citadis tram from Southbank depot and drove it 4 stops before ditching it.
On Sunday 18, he stole another tram from the depot. This time, he drove it 10 km through Melbourne, stopping to operate the turnouts manually twice along the way. He proceeded from the depot along the St Kilda Light Rail, then onto Clarendon St, Balaclava Rd and Glenferrie Rd.
He had nearly reached the Glenferrie Rd terminus when he was surrounded by police cars and power to that section of the network cut.
The same offender was later found having broken into a bus and attempting to drive it in his local suburb of Footscray. He had also attempted but failed to start a diesel train in North Melbourne.
