Also, a bicycle should not just be useful when ridden, it should also be useful when walking it by hand. The usefulness of a proper bicycle must also be judged by the possibilities of being used as a carry mule, when the gradient becomes too much to cycle or the paths too bad. The classic bike with its ergonomic U shaped handlebars close to the body provide a very good grip for walking with the big loads (and the most comfort when riding).
