>>1147772More speeds (rear), means the cogs of a cassette/freewheel are closer together. Below is the distance between the centre of the cogs on a cassette/freewheel in mm (pitch).
All modern 5 and 6-speed 5.50
All standard 7-speed 5.00
Campagnolo 8-speed 5.00
Shimano 8-speed 4.80
Campagnolo 9-speed 4.55
Shimano 9-speed 4.35
Campagnolo 10-speed 4.15

All chains have the same distance between links. Between 5,6,7,8 speed chains, the internal width between the plates of a chain remained the same, but the length of the rivited pins and the thickness of the plates decreased, making the chains narrower. That's why 8 speed chains work on all systems lower, but it's better to use the actual speed chain as it is thicker & stronger.
At 9 speed they had to make the cog teeth narrower, so the actual internal distance between the plates of a chain got narrower as well.
>a decent version ofwhat do you mean by this ?
tldr ; get an 8 speed chain
