Aren't single speed bikes for children? It seems to me that some people just can't progress in life, and single speed is symptomatic of that, the desire for a return to childhood when bikes had no gears. I think the only reason these people won't go the whole hog and revert to tricycles is because the ire and ridicule would be impossible to avoid such an absurd spectacle an adult on a childs bike would present, whereas at least a bike with a childs drivetrain can go unnoticed generally speaking, although some of us do notice and we do chuckle as they pass.
