Same circumstances as the last time fixed gear became popular. Rising gas prices, inflation, unemployment...
At some level, the simplicity appeals to beginner cyclists. They have to learn less, take care of less.
Other predictions:
- there will be little attention paid to NJS & dank vintage parts--availability is the dominant factor
- 700x28c will be the most narrow 'acceptable' size
- stickers will still be popular, but not overwhelming--you're going to see a lot more that are spray.bike'd
