>sigh.....
Since the first tube was so obliterated I was concerned I may not have addressed the cause of the puncture. I didn't feel anything in the tire or on the rim. Then while I'm out I get a slow flat after about an hour. Fix that and start heading home and get another blow out a few km later.
I think the big problem is that my rim is narrow and the bead on the Schwalbe Marathon Winter tire is really thick so they don't play nice. In the event of a blowout the tire comes off the rim immediately and the tube slips out. Then a feature of the Surly Troll frame comes into play. For versatility the frame has v-brake bosses and a disc brake tab. The v-brake bosses are the perfect little hooks to grab the tube when it falls out.
The tube from today's first flat has a hole on the rim side near the valve hole. But I'm not going to take a chance on that rim / tire combo again. I'll throw the studded tires on my touring bike and use that instead. Its probably been about 8 years since I took that out in the winter.
