Think of it like the strut in a modern car: it's responsible for keeping the rear end straight. In the end, AMP was willing to sacrifice everything in the name of weight. This included durability. At 22-23 pounds for every bike they made, the strategy paid off, but things like the rear shock paid the price. Period riders either rebuilt it often, or added ounces for a Risse shock.
