Zurich works really well with trains doubling as commuter trains and Metro, very tight frequencies of around 5-10 minutes in the inner areas, 15 for close burbs, and 30 for outer burbs. Frequent trams around the city as well, currently being expanded with additional lines further out as feeders to the train stations. Trams aren't always very fast, but they make up for it by being convenient, you don't lose time walking to distant stations or underground/elevated access.
