What's the deal with cantilever brakes? I just finished fixing up an old 80/90's mountain bike and they were a total bitch to setup, which isn't that big of a deal in and of itself, but the return springs on the front one's are so soft that they barely work, despite all the cables being under tension I'm afraid to replace them since with stronger return springs, I'm not sure I'd be able to even get the damn things setup.
The rears work quite well so the bike is usable (the front's work to an extent, but you have to throw the lever out and then squeeze it as hard as possible to get it to work.

They're spaced off the rim about as much as the rears and they're working fine.
