For hiking & mtb, I use an app called GaiaGPS. I quite like it, but to my eye, their default map styling really emphasizes parking lots when you're in the city. (I would rather see road names...)
The cynic in me thinks that this is surely some marketing angle ("Ugh look at all these parking lots, I have to get away..."), but it really does leave you with a grim feeling when you see how much land is just parking.
