>>1595160Both series were rebuilt from the 4500 class, which were the first 4-6-2s to operate in Europe. (Though UK had previously built a few for export). The original saturated-steam versions made about 1,800hp at the cylinders, whereas the Mastodons made 4,200hp (1934 series) and 4,700hp (1940 series) at the cylinders.
That said, I do kinda like the look of the initial 4500s such as this one, with the white paint and oval windows, has a sort of elegance to it.
