I do like the chopper look of LWB recumbents (American style), but it also makes them rather impractical (large turning circle, issues with bike racks and train transport), and the low seating position may actually put you at greater risk on the road, both because you have less visibility over traffic and because you can't be seen quite as easily inbetween other vehicles.
SWB recumbents (Euro style) with a high seating position and the pedals in front of the wheel may look absolutely fucking clownish, but probably are the better bikes.
