They're not maintenance free and not failure free, just lower maintenance than exposed chains. On the flipside they have higher resistance, need to be tensioned precisely, can still be snapped if you're unlucky, and can't be easily retrofitted, only sold on new bikes unless you wanna cut in a hole on your seatstay to retrofit a pass-through. In short there's nothing a belt accomplished than an enclosed chain can't.

Hub is just one extra screw to loosen the shifter, then it's just same procedure as any singlespeed.
Drum is stupid though. Why has nobody made a drum to disc brake conversion plate yet? It can't be too hard, just a chunk of metal and you can stick it into any walmart mtb frame with usually unused disc mount and actually have brakes.
