Let's give you sperglords some measurements.
The edge of the lever is positioned 1.5cm from the inner edge of the bullhorn. Actuating it with all 4 fingers results in 8 mm of cable pull at the absolute tightest I can squeeze.
Actuating it with just the thumb results in.. 8mm of cable pull.

Your brake levers should be set up so you can fully actuate them, and more than that, you shouldn't need an iron grip to achieve 100% of what your brakes can do--that'd be dangerous. That would be an indication that the brake pads or braking surface are contaminated or worn.
