I personally don't race anymore. I only commute or do small casual rides in the evening around the block for enjoyment. I never wear a helmet, but I ride relatively slow and careful.
That being said, I had a crash which totalled my bike some years ago and didn't wear a helmet. My memory was completely erased. I do not know what happened, except waking up in the ambulance. I had multiple cuts and perforations on my face. The flesh of my shoulder was scraped off to the muscle. Lucky I didn't lose an eye. I broke a spinous process on my vertebrae spine, suffered hearing loss on one ear. I will remain with occasional neck pain for the rest of my life and a permanent high pitched tinnitus in my left ear. My life has changed forever because of this. Tinnitus is, in its own way, the worst illness you could have, because it robs you of silence and affects every little thing in your life.
If you race or ride moderately sportive: WEAR A FUCKING HELMET!
