anyway, for sustained climbs, staying on the saddle, moving your legs like pistons, and high rpm pedaling is considered the correct way to climb. when you're looking to 'jump' over small, rolling hills, getting off the saddle and using your weight and force to sustain momentum is completely okay.
the reason that leaving the saddle is bad on sustained climbs is that you do not have the leverage of the saddle to provide a counter force to your upward pedal stroke. when your butt is on the bike, your legs can use your butt's stationary position similarly to how people rowing a boat would. that DOES NOT mean that standing up on the bike during a climb is a bad thing. aside from the small, rolling hills scenario, your legs need to stretch out if you're on long climbs, so getting off the saddle for a little bit isn't a bad idea--but, staying off the saddle for the entirety of a 1500ft. climb is just stupid.
