Take even New York City. Urbanists conveniently sweep under the rug the incontrovertible fact that NYC has always had a HUGE taxi culture, with the yellow taxi a global symbol of mobility in the big apple, glorified in movies and TV. Taxi Driver, Cash Cab, Taxi, The Fifth Element, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the list could go on. Part of the reason it’s so easy to be car free in NY is that there’s always a taxi, and now always an Uber or Lyft nearby ready to take you from where you are to where you need to go. Sure it’s more expensive, but people happily pay more because it’s better.
