I have shoes that don't offer grip on even the most aggressive pin pedals, and i have shoes that don't slip very much on rat trap pedals like the mks sylvan or touring lite pedals and kind of nullify having large mtb pedals with pins. maybe my feet are just small enough that i have no issue with smaller rat trap pedals.
clipless is honestly pretty nice for comfort over long distances as well, helps to isolate variables for endurance rides that are 60, 70, 80 miles long. they also do hold far better than any pinned pedal on shitty terrain or off-road.
it's nice, but you don't NEED clipless at all. toe clips suck ass though, especially the atrocity toe clip pedals like pic rel.
