it's the stock White Industries made by Sugino crank Marin specced on it in 96.
the middle ring had chipped teeth so i moved the outer ring to the middle position with shorter chainring bolts and use a deore friction thumbie and a tricolour road mech to shift it. It's 42/22. Shifts surprisingly fast and smooth.
Dumping gears to get up a hill on a trail is quicker than with a triple.
The gearing is quite nice too, with a 11-32 cassette.
The ratios overlap at 42x30 and 22x16 so there isn't a hole in the middle, you just ride most of the cassette on both rings, which works fine with a bit of friction trimming.
I was gonna look out for a good replacement middle ring but I like it like this. I also just found one of the now extinct UN-55s for it because the current bb has a bit of play.
