Why is it that bicycles only increased their rear cog count fairly slowly over time? Like, you have 5 speed freewheels, right? Then for a few years 6, then 7. Why did they ever bother to stop at 5 to begin with? Is it that much more technical to go straight to a 7 speed freewheel? Like, they all take the same chain width most of the time anyways. Is it just so they can dole out the tech slowly, giving people a reason to buy the more expensive bikes?
