only other thing to mention is the shape of the outer plates, its something to do with SIS shifting, but does not make much difference.
I like KMC chains, they often come with the bike from new.
there is allot of variance depending on how harsh the bike is used,
but a chain is good for about 500 kilometre's before damage to the pins causes the chain pitch to get too long and eat into the teeth.

the old 5 speed chains are slightly thicker, they dont deflect much horizontally
chains between 6 and 8 speed are thinner and much same as each other
9 speed and above are thinner again, and are made to cross chain
if you use a chain that's too thin it can fall in between the wide spacing of old front crank sets

this should be no problem
to give KMC as example the following chains will work with 6 7 and 8 speed MTB freewheels and clusters

z7

yea I dont really like the newer tourny tz stuff it seems to get damaged easily
where the older Tourney TY20 and Altus A20 types have thicker parts and responds much more really to adjustment
C50 is also briddy good but less common

chain width is a subject complicated by the divergence between road and MTB standards (somewhere around 9 speed things get odd)
but if your road bike is old enough to have 7 speeds it can take the 1970s to 1990s MTB type of chain (6 to 8 speed can use the same chain)(but a thinner version of 8 speed also exists)
best case is to measure the width of chain already on the bike as its likely the original or was a decent replacement
