What started as a "I'll make a winter beater BSO out of a spare frame and another BSO" turned into pretty much building the entire bike up from nothing, down to building the front wheel from scratch and rebuilding the rear one. It was quite fun, and the result rides surprisingly well. Finished it on the last day without snow.
The only part from the $15 donor bike I bought initially ended up being the rear tire (after I realised that studs on concrete are about as slippery as slicks on ice), but even with that it ended up about $100 minus frame (which I'm not even sure where I got from), pedals I got for free, loaner seat and all the tooling.
Rear fender failed 5 minutes after taking the picture and promptly became my front fender as that one was plain insufficient. Haven't had a chance to ride again yet though.
