The point I'm making is that if you took the suburban network into account, you could have a more comparable area on either side and observe the Paris suburban network (where most lines run 200-250m long trains operating on a 5 minutes headway before branching out towards further suburbs), you would cover an area more representative of an American-sized city and it would still put to shame the vast majority of your urban rail networks.
