wildlife aside, my opinions on helmets are pretty simple. When riding my commute, or around town on the road, or on a MUP with retarded pedestrians, yes.
When strolling around campus, or a quick cafe run - no.
Interestingly, you're statistically just as likely to be involved in some kind on a MUP or a road. Having seen the idiocy of pedestrians, little kids that walk/bike/scooter right in front of you, and near invisible dog retractable leads, I'd be inclined to believe it.
