there might be easily identifiable landmarks visible the flight crew, which make navigation easy,
but if they are not charted one a map, they are not usable. Not being charted means somebody who's not familiar won't know to look for them, and thus they become useless.
All a simulator needs as a bare minimum is to provide the visual elements which are used in real life flight planning for a flight. At that point realistic VFR navigation becomes possible.
