In Luis Buñuel's 1952 film "Illusion travels by streetcar" (La Ilusión viaja en tranvía) we get to see a tram using a siding, and there's mention of the "freight gondola", an open tram which was to pick up workers and freight at the slaughterhouse.
The open trams also carried goods from the farms in the rural areas to the city center, usually very early in the morning, to get to the market and avoid traffic. One of those trams is preserved in Mexico City's cute little transit museum, pic related.
