>>1243505>ScharfenbergYes, a good design and nearly universal deployment throughout Europe for EMUs/DMUs indeed, but it's mostly useless for any kind of locomotive hauled operations as it's actually a pretty weak coupler when it comes to maximal tractive effort.
>Electrical compatibilityI'd argue that's a non issue. It definitely would please my mild railway autism if everyone could agree on an identical connector, but in practice there's much more than the connector shape getting in the way of seamless electrical compatibility between different rolling stock. The backup UIC air pipes and electrical connectors are good enough for the occasional rescue run between mismatched stock.
>>1243745Actually, talks about a unified Euro coupler are so ancient that most of the european locomotives could be converted with very little effort, manufacturers leave an empty "box" right behind the centre hook. Remove the hook, drop a coupler in, reroute air pipes and you're done (without loosing chain and buffer compatibility). Wagons might be a bit more tricky (no idea if your typical end transom is strong enough to have all forces go through a center coupler).
