The problem comes down to the fact that even though they are efficeint and produce a lot of power, they can't really run at a low speed, so it's either a bunch of power right now or none. An ebike can't use all that power so you would have to store it, and You would pop the batteries at even the lowest speed unless you want to lug around a bunch of high Amp low capacity batteries which are not very efficient weight/Watt. Not to mention cost, riding around with a tank full of kerosene, and reliability.
