The particular lake I was imagining in the previous post isn't much of a hiking destination, but there is a boat launch site (maintained by residents of the lake) that is open to the public. So you can drive there on a weekend with a canoe on top of your car and go fishing and swimming.
But if we are talking about publicly-accessible hiking, I'm fine driving to the lifetime of opportunities for that in the US, many of which great specifically because they are far from cities and infrastructure. Just two weeks ago I went for a 4 mile, +700ft practice hike in a wilderness area a 20 minute drive my home (pic unrelated), I saw one car at the trailhead and the presumed owner relaxing by the nearby pond. I didn't see another soul on the trail. Peak fall colors and extremely peaceful.
