For really rough terrain where you most use your granny gear, 2nd, 3rd and maybe 4th, and then roll downhill, big fat wide tires will be your friend, and will provide the most enjoyable ride.
For faster rides, where it might be flat, where you pick up your 2nd crankgear, and in the middle gears, going faster, you'll appreciate a fork with at least 100mm travel. I've never ridden a high quality Full Susp. bike, but there's a reason that's the go-to for XC, trail, enduro, and downhill. The extra weight and maintenance and extreme costs are worth the plush cushion and comfort.
