>Is there a off the shelf bike for your design principle?>If it's a general principle ("I want an endurance bike"), is there a model with the parts you want?>Are you particular about the parts on it in general?>Do you need a special fit/gearing?>Do you have the tools needed, or are OK with buying them?>Do you like bike maintenance?Generally speaking, I haven't found it to be cheaper. However, I'm an autismo that finds a kind of zen in building things I use from boxes of parts. For example, I wanted a comfy bike and built a Cross Check. I could have bought the prebuilt, but I wasn't wild about the parts on it, and their prebuilt is a 1x; So, I put together what I wanted. However, in 2019 I got a road bike prebuilt because I liked the groupset and the geometry specs were good for me. I only swapped out the stem on that one.
