>>1595708There was a bunch of stuff not good with the drivetrain. Chain was worn past 1.0 on the checker, big chainring was toast, metal fragments inside the freehub, both derailleur pulleys wobbling more than normal. But I think today's issue was the chainring as I didn't seem to have slippage in the small ring.
With the big ring done, I'm finally forced to go 1X on the Surly. I removed the 22t granny and 36t big ring, and just have a 26t in the small ring position losing a bit of low and high range. Tempted to switch from 9s to 11s to get the range back. The aluminum big ring is fairly expensive to replace and not very durable, so I don't really want to buy another one.
Freehub slipping makes a somewhat distinct noise and the noise today was a bit different. It was clunking last week and bringing the bike in for a thaw made it go away. Took it apart to clean just to be sure. The metal slivers I found were the tips of the engagement points getting knocked off by a sticky pawl. No damage to the pawls, which are apparently a much tougher metal.
