>>1364409Can I ask what the purpose of the 60 mile ride is? If you just want to get fit and stuff then you could just get into running, or do a spinning class at a gym or whatever. Personally I use the treadmill at my gym for cardio. Running is of course much cheaper than cycling. Just a pair of basic running shoes are needed, and they're very cheap. I got mine for £20 ($25 USD).
If you are going to do regular long rides on a bike then some padded cycling shorts are definitely a good idea. You can get cheap ones which should still do the trick. On the upper half of your body it's probably less important, but the cycling shorts give you padding around your arse which make it much more comfortable, and they shouldn't chafe because they lack seams around the crotch. Some other clothes can chafe if you're cycling for long distances.
For cycling shorts you can get quite standard ones with an elastic waistband (left example in pic related, USD price is $28.28). Quite popular with beginners, they tend to be a little cheaper too. Or you can get bib shorts (right in pic related, USD price is $32.93), which is what more serious cyclists use, because the shoulder straps mean there's no waistband - the waistband can be uncomfortable over long distances. Bib shorts are a tiny bit more expensive because there's more material.
I love bib shorts personally. A lot of beginners go for waistband shorts though. It's up to you of course.
