OP here; thanks for your interest & information....
>this poster agrees that there is no way that any sane & savvy boat buyer would ever purchase a sailboat for more than a few hundred dollars without spending a couple of hundred bucks on a proper marine survey.
Here's her story, according to the guy whom I called: she's been on the hard at this marina for half a decade -- ever since Hurricane Sandy rubbed her against another fiberglass boat moored too closeby in 2012 -- and the guy says it's "gotta go." Good sales (so, I assume only a couple of years old as of the 2012 season, and then put away dry well in advance of the storm and left that way), but the interior has been neglected for five years, so I'll have to sorta remodel. I'm just happy that I won't have to buy sails. She's powered by a Westerbeke diesel, which is said to be operational, so that's another huge plus. I'm only a couple of states over along some pretty safe but busy waters, meaning it'll take less than a day's sailing to get her to my home marina, where I should be able to get a good deal on storage, parts & work on account of the long relationship they had with my family in general and my late father in particuar. I'm getting a little teary thinking about this. I feel impelled to do it.
...who wants to join me as crew for our reenactment of 1973's S.O.R.C. overall victory by a nearly identical red Ranger 37?

I feel good about this.
