Also, I'd trust a Reid cycles bike. Australia has them for like, $150USD. They're not amazing but they're better than wal-mart bikes, and cheaper than American bike shop entry level bikes by far.
For around $200 USD I can snag one with double-wall rims, alloy crank, tourney-tier derailleur, alloy brakes/arms/handlebars/stem, sealed BB, metal fenders, rack, helmet, etc..
Reid bikes frequently break down because they're bought by idiots who never take even basic care to true wheels until they're taco'd, ride on them flat, etc.,
You could upgrade one- better chain, grips, cables, and brake pads, and you'd have a solid bike in the end for WAY less than you'd spend on a bike shop bike, and it's not that much worse.
Granted, that's for going around on town on a cheap bike, not for proper mountain bike stuff.
