The early models (I've heard them called "sticks") had a frame that was shaped like the letter "F" instead of a diamond frame, which made it easier to mount and a designed rack for carrying cargo.
Later "space-frame" models had a king-pin which when removed would separate the frame into two parts that could be more easily carried in a travel bag.
