Gravel bikes (in one way) are a check on the industry who saw mountain bikes growing increasing competent, which made riding the kind of fireroads, rail trail, chill paths most people ride, boring. So modern gravel bikes are a return to a less competent bike, alla classic mountainbikes, which are really more fun on a lot of surfaces.
You also have gravel bikes that approach from the other direction though. Which are roadies who like riding gravel on their road bikes and just want something -more- capable for it, but still a road-esque bike.
