narcissism is a normal human behavior, individualism, but the pathological narcissism of American society is the reason why civic architecture and planning is not taken seriously at all. the fiat currency system indulged civic society at the expense of community and state-building, leaving us with the hollow empire we have now, but the well-developed commerce infrastructure... a perfect service economy. Everyone has a house and a garage and a driveway and a car and a highway to get to a drive-thru... no inconvenience.
