They advertise it as a way to avoid queues and buying paper tickets, but you can already purchase tickets online and new ticket machines were just installed at my local station, not to mention that you can purchase tickets on board as well. You can purchase a season ticket, which would be a benefits had they not forced you to put a passport-styled photo on the card.

On the bright side, a few years back the Glasgow Subway introduced an Oyster-like card reader system. Though they still use paper tickets, it would be very useful if they integrate it with the rest of Glasgow's rail network.
