Humans are visual monkeys, we respond better with pictures than words
And yes, I work in something related to this and the laws we have to follow make everything nice illegal. The laws are copy-pasted between cities so our very sunny city has to suffer from following things like laws aimed at maximizing the amount of Sun reaching the ground when we should instead maximize shaded areas.
If you want some OC gore then I have picrel. It is exactly what I've been asking, a bike lane next to the main road, besides bad lighting, no rail stopping you from falling into the river, and plenty of spaces where you could be easily mugged, the biggest and most stupid problem is that there are maybe four access points in the whole length of the lane, most are concentrated on the north (I'm standing on one and you can see another one in the back), this line reaches about a third into the city. So it makes no sense to use and instead I'm stuck in this always congested street alongside everyone.
