Disney Springs is one of the better American examples I can come with, though the space is entirely entertainment/shopping focused. You are able to entirely walk from a neighboring resort to the Springs, while it's fed from the outside by cars, buses, and I believe a small ferry service running from the other nearby resorts. I'm surprised they haven't tried putting in a Buena Vista-style streetcar system yet, but it's probably to damn crowded to try it.
Again, Walt Disney was a total train autist and would have fit in well on this board.
