I've had an idea for an alternate history worldbuilding project that I've never gotten around to starting.
It's basically in a parallel universe where during the great depression in the 1930's America built a network of ultra broad 12 foot "railship" gauge railroads instead of the interstate highway system, which was only eventually built much later than it was in our universe. The train cars would be 24 feet across by 30 feet high and be upwards of 160 feet long with 3 decks. The locomotives would enormous machines up to 300 feet long and weighing thousands of tons. Standard gauge trains would continue to serve as feeders for the landship trains.
